The Great Commission as commanded by our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is clear and unqualified: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15)
We at Bytown Baptist Church believe that it is the responsibility and privilege of every born-again saint to evangelize and make known the Gospel of Truth in their communities. A local church that fails at this fails at fulfilling one of its most basic and foundational responsibilities.
The Gospel that is to be preached, specifically, is the same Gospel that was preached by the apostle Peter some 2000 years ago: "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out..." (Acts 3:19). We are to preach and teach men and women everywhere of the necessity of repentance from sin and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for it is not a suggestion from the Lord, nor is it an invitation, it is God's commandment (Acts 17:30).
Not only is the Gospel message to be unchanged from the commandments set out in Scripture, we believe that the methods by which this Great Commission is to be fulfilled must follow biblical methods. We believe that God is best glorified when our evangelistic efforts are based on Scripture and the faith of Jesus Christ, rather than modernistic pragmatism. This is why our chief method of evangelism is open-air preaching, not elaborately planned church events meant to attract the unconverted.
The glory of God is truly chief in our evangelism. If the primary goal of our evangelism was to fill a church building, a great deal of things would change in how we reach out to unbelievers. Our chief objective, in all that we do at Bytown Baptist Church (including evangelism) is to glorify God, which is why we proclaim the Word of God to all men, the way the Word of God teaches us to do it.
